Dojo Nameboards - Kanban

Here are a couple of Kanban that we made for Hull Zanshin Karate club. 

The first is the clubs style or Ryu - Wado Ryu and the second is the clubs name. 

These were made from an engineered oak plywood board, of which we only have limited stock left. Typically we make our kanban from hardwood veneered medium-dense fibre board with balancer. 

These boards are far more stable than a solid piece of hardwood and there is also a material cost saving. 

Kanban are priced by number of kanji ranging from base cost of £245.00 up to £336.00 for 11 kana. to replace a scroll.

KAR Kanban

We recently made a Kanban for Kaze Arashi Ryu to replace a scroll.

The scroll with their kanji would be taken to their different dojo and displayed while training.

They were looking to replace it with something a little more substantial.

Kanban for Kempo Karate Association

We recently made a internal dojo name board for Kempo Karate Association.

Their logo is the the kanji for Kempo and their full name in English text.

So we just added the kanji for Karate Association to complete the commission.

External Dojo Nameboard - Kanban

We were recently asked to make a external dojo name board for Bushi Jutsu Ryu, The club name was translated into kanji and a brush script font was used.

We reworked the logo in our graphics package and added it to the kanji

The production starts with a high quality curved aluminium profile that is used for directional signage in corporate buildings. The graphics are applied to a plastic substrate that fits into the rebate of the frame at the sides and then custom end caps are fitted.

There are hidden fixing points behind the graphic, to gain access a plastic suction tool is used to pop the graphic from the frame.

Kanban for Norway

As part of a larger shipment to a club in Norway was a Dojo Nameboard. 

We incorporated the Inyo, the symbol of the JKA and the text in katakana and kanji for Baerum Shotokan Karate Club and added their name in Norwegian at the bottom. 

A maple veneered board was used in our standard black frame.

We recently made a Shotokan plaque for a customer based on our "Kanban", dojo name board range. We like how it turned out and think it would work well in this vertical format for any Ryu.

External Kanban

We have been asked a few times if our wooden nameboards were suitable for external use and unfortunately they are not. So when we were asked by an existing client for an external kanban we thought perhaps it was time to see what we could come up with.

It took a couple of attempts to end up with the finished kanban that we were happy to add to our range.

Many thanks to Newark Shotokan Karate Club for your patience well we experimented with a number of options.

Although our wooden Kanban are for internal use only, this range can be used both Externally and Internally because the width is reduced from 265mm to 150mm it may be more suited when there are more kana to display.

Dojo Nameboards - Kanban

Sometimes the workshop is so busy that we forget to share a custom commission. 

This was a project that was completed back in Spring 2021.

Kanban can be produced in either a block or brush font on either maple or oak.

This Kanban for the Karate Dojo was the brush font on a maple veneered board.

Delivery is always an issue with long objects, so it is included on short boards, but is individually quoted for longer boards.

International shipping on longer objects can become uneconomic. 

Anyway we delivered this one personally and had a look round this amazing dojo.

Kanban (Dojo Nameboard) to Somerset

 I just thought I would share a few photos of a Kanban for Somerset Karate

The client supplied an existing logo which we imported into our graphics package.

The first word is Somerset so Katakana is used, the next two kanji read Golden Dragon and then the last four are a little more familiar to most reading karate dojo. Internal photos do not always show the kanban to their best so I thought I would also take a picture outside the workshop in the sunshine.

Kanban - 看板 - Dojo Name Boards

A few weeks ago I was honoured to have the privilege of training at the integrated budokan of Teikyo University in Tokyo.
I thought I would snap a few images of Japanese style kanban and compare them to the sign boards I produce here in the UK.

To the left of the doors to the karate dojo is a small kanban, the column on the right 帝京大学 reads Tekiyo University and on the left karate club.

On the right is the larger sign which has one less kanji, university is daigaku, but here just dai is used.

Above is a set of kanban that we made for a uk club with both club and association kanji.

Dojo Name boards for Shogai Karate

We were delighted recently to produce two name boards for Shogai Karate dojo part of HDKI GB.

The boards were made from an engineered blank which comprises of 6mm Oak bonded to a 16mm plywood, commercially produced as flooring. Typically going forward we plan to use our existing suppliers to source Oak, Maple or Beech veneers on a 18mm MDF substrate.

 The kanji are in large 430 point and sit on the boards that are 265mm wide in their frames.
The Left board reads - Shogai Karate Dojo and the Right board reads - Honbu Dojo Karate Eikoku (GB). The final frames are 1315mm x 265mm and are designed for internal use.
