Walsall Karate Dojo celebrate 20th Anniversary

We were recently contacted by the Yudansha of Walsall Karate Dojo and asked if we could produce a plaque to celebrate the clubs 20th Anniversary.
We worked with them and produced a couple of designs.

The photo shows the plaque just before dispatch. The plaque was larger than most of our commissions (600 x 400mm) and needed to be in a single piece rather than in nafuda sections. We used a 12mm mdf board with a maple veneer and balancer, the board was sanded to 320 grade and a couple of coats of sanding sealer applied before it was french polished and the graphics applied.
It has taken a couple of weeks, very happy with the end result.

If you have a project in mind just drop us an E Mail to sotosabisu@btinternet.com with a brief outline and we will help you work up the design and provide you a quotation. Current costings can be found in the relevant shop page please click on the button below to view.

The AKA celebrate Williams Sensei's promotion to Godan

We were recently commissioned to produce a Nafudakake to celebrate many years of dedication to Karate and promotion to Godan of Keith Williams Sensei from the Applied Karate Association.

The client selected a maple hardwood for the nafuda which forms a striking contrast to our standard black frame. This is proving to be the most popular combination giving high definition to both text and logos.
The logo provided was not in a format that could be loaded directly into our graphic design package and required some re-modelling and complete insertion of both kanji and English text. We managed to achieve a very high quality reproduction in a vector format which can now be increased to any size without loosing quality or pixelating.

Soto Sabisu send our congratulations to Williams Sensei and happy New Year to all at the AKA, Osu!

If you are thinking about commissioning a nafudanake please remember that our nafudakake are all custom made and take 4 to 6 weeks to produce. If you would like to make an inquiry just send an E mail to sotosabisu@btinternet.com with some outline details of your requirements. Virtual Nafudakake - Leeds Shotokan Elite Karate

We have recently completed a "Virtual Nafudakake" for Leeds Shotokan Elite Karate.

The club provided us with the names and grades and we undertook the translation into Katakana and Kanji. The image was sent to the club as a pdf and jpeg file in both low and high resolution so their "webmaster" can add it to their website.

We also provided the club with support developing their logo which was also incorporated into the design. If there is only minor graphic design from a High Resolution image that you provide there is no additional charge. If we have to build your logo from scratch a small charge will apply to cover our additional time.

You can choose from our "Block" or "Brush" font and add the name of your instructor / members. We can use an existing translation from a dan grade certificate or provide a translation for you.

The cost of a virtual nafudakake is only £4.95 per nafuda and when new members join just send us their details and we will update your nafudakake for just the cost of the new nafuda.
After gradings you will want to keep your Virtual nafudakake up to date, E Mail Soto Sabisu the details and we will get them changed and E Mail back your update "Virtual Nafudakake".

As an example, this virtual nafudakake contains 9 nafuda, so 9*£4.95 = £44.55,
If you order a virtual nafudakake at the same time as ordering an "actual" nafudakake we will apply a 50% discount to the virtual version.

Virtual Nafudakake
Cost per Nafuda £4.95
Virtual Nafudakake Updates
Up to 15 changes in grade £4.95
Unlimited changes in grade £9.95

Oval Inkan

We were recently asked to produce an Inkan with both Christian and Surname.
This would not be a normal Japanese format but we are able to meet most custom requests from clients.
The names were translated into Katakana and the graphic design for the stamp was developed.
The design did not fit well into either a round or square format so we suggested to our client that they consider a traditional oval format and supplied a proof for their consideration.
Graphic design proof

Completed Inkan and test stamp prior to dispatch
We have added the Oval Inkan to our range (full details below)
The 16 x 11mm format allows for a few more kana to fit in a two column layout.
The price detailed allows for up to 12 kana but a couple more could be added at an additional £1.50 per kana if required.

If you would like to place an order for an Inkan or Hanko follow the links at the base of the table above to view more examples. Consider your options on size and design etc and then just drop us an E Mail to sotosabisu@btinternet.com with your requirements and we will work up a graphic design for you. Current costings can be found in the relevant shop page please click on the button below to view.

The benefits of Brexit

There is always a positive, you just have to look for it.

Here in England we are suffering for an extremely poor currency exchange rate at the moment.
Post our Brexit vote I purchased a dogi from Hirota in Japan and paid about twenty percent more than what I would normally expect to pay. However poor buying power for me may mean excellent purchasing power for you if you are outside the UK with a strong currency.

We have just shipped a commission out to the US where our client benefited greatly from the current exchange rate.

The Nafudakake was a little different from the majority of commissions.
Our client wanted to incorporate the Shotokan tiger his name and the four international associations that he was a member of. He also wanted to use just kana on the nafuda, which is something we regularly do for Japanese and high ranking recipients.

The four groups our client was a member of were The International Shotokan Ryu Karate-do Shihankai, The World Japan Karate-do Association, The Karate of Japan Federation International and The International Society of Okinawan and Japanese Karate-do.

Our Nafudakake are all custom made and take 4 to 6 weeks to produce.
The example above was £210+ £35 shipping to the US. Our client used transfer wise with a rate of 1 USD = 0.7712 GBP with a small fee of $3.18..... Courtesy of the benefits of Brexit here in England.

Custom Hanko for Rengokai karate

We were recently approached by Rengokai karate to produce some custom Hanko.
They asked for a non standard size 32 x 32mm.
We are happy to accommodate custom sizes and because it was a multiple order we undertook the custom set up free of charge.

The Hanko were to have association name followed by the examiners christian and surnames.
This is really a mix of a organisation and personal stamp which you would not normally find in Japan, but we have the flexibility to produce whatever you want.

We wanted to maximise the "fill" on the Hanko and keep uniform sizing across the six hanko requested.
We selected 28pt font for the association and 16pt for the names and the graphic design was sent for approval.

After approval the Hanko were made up and tested prior to dispatch.

From enquiry to dispatch was approx 7 days, a little quicker than we quote, but it does depend on workload going through the shop. Full details of our range of Inkan and Hanko can be found below, if you have a project in mind, just drop us a E Mail to sotosabisu@btinternet.com

Yojijukugo

Do you ever find yourself in a situation where you can not seem to find the right words to express what you are feeling, or that words do not seem to do justice to the depth of feeling ......

Recently when words failed me I took a few hours out to make a 木製 の 銘板,  mokusei no meiban  which translates to wooden plaque.
I selected a Yojijukugo 四字熟語 - 一刻千金 Ikkoku senkin, which means every moment is precious and added a few words underneath.

Typically in Japan a motto or saying may be represented as a four character ideogram called a Yojijukugo 四字熟語 these can be either idiomatic or non-idiomatic e.g. the kanji could directly represent the meaning of the saying or bear no relationship at all.
So a direct translation word for word would be pretty meaningless, and although there are over 20,000 Yojijukugo I have select a few and put them in a table below and also made a link to and extensive selection to a few thousand others.

Kanji Pronunciation Meaning
以心伝心 Ishin denshin Heart-to-heart communication
To have a tacit understanding
一期一会 Ichigo ichie Meeting only once in a lifetime
Every encounter is treasures, because there may be no reunion
一騎当千 Ikki tousen To have capability to be equal to 1000 persons

完全無欠 Kanzen muketsu Absolute perfection / impeccability
奇想天外 Kisou tengai Out-of-this-world
Fantastic things which cannot be expected at all
堅忍不抜 Kennin fubatsu to endure of firm volition and be not perturbed by anything
Fortitude
行雲流水 Kouun ryusui The free heart without tenacity of purpose
Takeing things as they are
山紫水明 Sanshi suimei Outstanding natural beauty
色即是空 Shikisoku zeku All are phenomena although everything is equipped with various shapes. There is no invariable eternity substance and essence is the empty. (Teaching of Buddhism)
順風満帆 Junpu manpan Smooth sailing

Custom Plaque for Aikibujutsu Senyokai

Aikibujutsu Senyokai dojo contacted us and asked if we could custom build a plaque for them. As everything we do is hand made we are well placed to produce one-off custom commissions.
They wanted to use their logo and font which they had in pdf format.
We needed to import the image into our graphic design package and convert to a vector image so we could edit it.
The finished vector image is made from a series of mathematical curves, it will print very crisply even when re-sized. For instance, one can print a vector logo on a small sheet of copy paper, and then enlarge the same vector logo to billboard size and keep the same crisp quality.
A low-resolution raster graphic would blur or pixelate excessively if it were enlarged from business card size to billboard size.
The Completed plaque ready for dispatch to the USA

Close up of the high quality and crisp lines of a vector image.
The plaque was larger than most of our commissions and needed to be in a single piece rather than in nafuda sections.  We used a 12mm mdf board with a maple veneer and balancer, the board was sanded to 320 grade and a couple of coats of sanding sealer applied before it was french polished and the graphics applied. It has taken a couple of weeks to produce because we had to order in the maple board just for this job, very happy with the end result.

Inkan or Hanko?

All our work is custom so it is very easy for us to produce just what our clients want.
We were recently contacted by Grove Martial Arts and requested to make some stamps that were not in our standard range.
What Grove were after was a stamp that could accommodate christian, surname and title but still be relatively small in size.
So it had to be bigger than stamps in our Inkan range and smaller than stamps in our Hanko range. We suggested using a square format as it provides more space and suggested 18 x 18mm as a format.

Above is the graphic design that we provided for approval to Grove Martial Arts for the three stamps.
They were very pleased with the graphics and approved the design proofs for production, the stamps were made up and dispatched with a few days.

Above is a photo of the stamps ready for dispatch.
We have now added this format to our range as it is an ideal transition between a personal Inkan and a dojo or Association Hanko.
Below is a full list of the costings in our range of Martial art stamps.

A Nafudakake in New York

When we get a commission we often supply a few options for our client to consider before production. A block font was eventually selected because it allowed us to match the kanji used for the association title with the katakana used for the the instructors name.

There are usually a number of different ways to represent a foreign name in katakana. We always try and offer advice to a client of the best translation to use.
Our preference is to stick to an existing translation if it is supplied by their association. Secondly we will use a translation they have used in the past, for example on a belt. If required we will of course provide a translation.
Our client could not provide a copy of any of the perspective recipient's dan grade certificates and he did not have a photo which showed clearly kana from a belt.
The nafadakake was being made for an association chief instructor and I had remembered reading in the past that he had commented that even the Japanese in the press had represented his name incorrectly. The pressure was on ... The commission was to be a gift so it was not possible for our client to ask directly.
I searched the WTKO website for a translation, no joy. Eventually it dawned on me, where to find an accurate translation ... "Google" , no not Google Translate, but Google Images. I had recent written an article on my karate club website on what the kana on Japanese grading certificates meant. The layout is similar for most Japanese style organisations. The name of the recipient would appear as the Chief Instructor of the association. I "googled" WTKO dan certificate and an image came up with someones Shodan certificate and a clear image of the chief instructors name in Katakana.

There was another reason why I was particularly proud to be producing a nafudakake for Amos Sensei. About five years ago he had clicked a "like" button, no big deal you may say, well it was for me.
I had just made my first nafudakake for my own club, after not being able to find anyone to make me one.
It had taken me many months of struggling with images, because I was not working in a graphic design package and having many abortive attempts at getting the images onto hardwood.
I wasn't very happy with what I produced, but at quite a superficial level it looked ok.

I put an image on Facebook of my nafudakake, it had ash nafuda in a walnut kake, I wondered if I could try and make them commercially, but the quality at the time was not even close to a commercial product.
Anyway it was just too difficult, the amount of effort that had gone in was not reflected in the output. I was ready to say well, I gave it my best , but that is all I have.
That one click from an instructor thousands of miles away changed everything for me. I can clearly remember telling my wife, Richard Amos "liked" my photo ... Richard Amos ... I just got a blank look, it was no use explaining ....
That one click of silent encouragement was enough for me to spend five hundred hours plus to improve and improve, until I produced a version that in my opinion was of a commercial quality.

Always an honour to produce a piece for a senior instructor.
I wonder if one day I will ever get an opportunity to train at the WTKO Honbu dojo in New York.
I suppose I could have offered to deliver it in person.

A Dojo Nafudkake for Walsall Karate

Walsall Karate was established in 1996 and opened a full time dojo a few years ago. They have worked long and hard to create a high quality environment, that would reflect the quality of the club and provide the best opportunity for its members to flourish.
graphic design for Walsall Karate Dojo
With all his building work completed and his club well established in the community Steve Carless Sensei was looking to make further investments in his dojo.
One of his criteria was a nafudakake that could accommodate further growth and development.

The yudansha nafudakake
and there is more ....
Steve wanted to commission a nafudakake for his dan grades, but wanted to explore what he could do for his kyu and mon grades.
As with most clubs, junior grades will come and go and he wanted to recognise the significant achievement that the yudansha had made.
At Sotos Sabisu all our nafuda are made from quality hardwoods, in this case cherry and maple, the kanji and katakana are high resolution images produced in our graphic design package.
Steve had a local resource that could make up pine nafuda and varnish them, to which he planned to add their names in normal text. On promotion to Shodan, the club will have Soto Sabisu produce a hardwood nafuda with kana to match their certificate and this will then be inserted in the yudansha kake.
He also wanted to maximise the space available, so we suggested "stacking" frames one above the other. Steve wanted to try and keep all the framing material as small as possible so it was similar to the Dan grade certificates on the rear wall of the dojo.

Layout of both kake at the dojo entrance.
Rather than "stacking the frames we milled the standard section to accommodate a large rebate above the nafuda and a smaller rebate at the base of the nafuda so they can be removed and re-positioned after gradings. The challenge meant building a kake nearly 3m long and 1.6m high but with tolerances of +/- 0.5mm. What we suggested is that Soto Sabisu produce the kake and the grade nafuda and Walsall Karate produce the student nafuda, ensuring costs were kept at an affordable level.
Walsall karate dojo has over 250 members and requested room for expansion. They supplied the wall dimensions available and we made the kake just under size. The kake can hold just over 350 nafuda so they should be ok for a while.
grade nafuda by Soto Sabisu in Cherry and name nafuda by Walsall karate in pine
I think the end result looks brilliant, a great solution to the challenges that we had discussed. Steve has both kyu and mon grades and seeing as he had some spare space now he wanted t add his ungraded students, so they too felt part of the dojo. There are a couple of transitional grades from mon to kyu and Steve wanted to reflect this as well. We customised the grade nafuda to his dojo's requirements.
graphic design of Walsall's dan, kyu, transitional, mon and Mu nafuda
Both kake were too large to transport in a single piece so were transported to the dojo and made up on site. If required we can produce plans for the kake to be made locally, this may well be an important factor if considering for export.

Below is our current costings for nafuda:

Scrolling Nafudakake for Walsall karate dojo

We have recently completed a "Virtual Nafudakake" with a scrolling feature for Walsall karate dojo.
This was in addition to the "actual" nafudakake that was produced for the dojo.
The image was provided as a pdf and jpeg file so their "webmaster" can add it to their wesite.

We can add your logo and include traditional title nafuda. Examples include "daihyo - delegation", "shihan - master", "shidoin - instructors", "shidojoin - assistants" etc.
You can choose from our "Block" or "Brush" font and add the name of your instructor / members. We can use an existing translation from a dan grade certificate or provide a translation for you.

I have posted below a few photos from the actual nafudakake for comparison.

As an example, the scrolling virtual nafudakake in the presentation contains 57 nafuda, so 57*£4.95 = £282.15, If you order a virtual nafudakake at the same time as ordering an "actual" nafudakake we will apply a 50% discount to the virtual version.

Virtual Nafudakake
Cost per Nafuda £4.95

Up to 15 changes in grade £4.95
Unlimited changes in grade £9.95

Changing Nafuda after gradings - Dojo Nafudakake

We are often asked how can we change the position of the nafuda after gradings.
I thought a picture of the nafudakake in section would help.
Above is the general layout of a dojo nafudakake showing the head, mid-rail and cill sections.
I have "shunk" the height so you can see all the sections, but you will notice the nafuda sits in a shallow rebate and the head has a much deeper rebate. This allows for the nafuda to be raised into the head and lowered onto the cill and it will not fall out.

Custom Nanakorobi Yaoki

We recently produced a custom plague as a presentation piece.
Our client liked the look of our standard "Fall Seven times and stand up eight", but wanted it as a gift to celebrate forty years of karate training for a friend.
We were requested to add a name, Sensei  and possibly rank to the plaque.
We always pride ourselves on trying to get a good balance to our work and suggested that we use a katakana translation for the name and kanji for title and rank along with the English script.

Customising standard work is undertaken at an additional charge just to recover any time spent in translation and additional graphic design.

Soto Sabisu sends our congratulations to Phil Owen Sensei and hope you enjoy many more years of training, Osu!

We will keep a limited stock of the standard plaque, specials can be made to order with approximately a 2 to 3 week delivery dependent on workload going through the shop. Current costings can be found in the relevant shop page please click on the button below to view.

Dojo Kun for JKS Perth

We were recent asked for a dojo kun, but requested if we could add JKS Perth to the Nafudakake.

We started with the JKS logo, imported it into our graphic design package and added the word Perth and converted it to a vector image. The nafuda would have looked a bit sparse so we added the kanji for Japan Karate Shotorenmei and the kana for Perth. The graphic design was then sent to our client for approval.

Graphic design proof
After approval we were able to make a start on the commission. The nafuda are made from maple which is known for its distinctive grain patterns. Looking left to Right the 1st, 3rd and 5th nafuda have what is called a "ripple" pattern to the grain, A block font was used and a black kake (frame) which has a strong contrast to the maple.

Completed Custom  Dojo Kun
We are now offering the larger size dojo kun with a option of the additional nafuda for club or association details, the size is approx 540 x 365mm. Current costings can be found in the relevant shop page please click on the button below to view.

Nana korobi ya oki

Fall down seven times, get up eight 七転び八起き

Graphic design in block font with additional Hanko seal added

"Nana korobi ya oki" (literally: seven falls, eight getting up) means fall down seven times and get up eight. This speaks to the Japanese concept of resilience. No matter how many times you get knocked down, you get up again.
Even if you should fall one thousand times, you just keep getting up and trying again. You can see this ethic reinforced in all facets of Japanese culture including education, business, sports, the martial arts It is especially important to remember the sentiment expressed in this proverb when times are dark. There are no quick fixes in life and anything of real worth will necessarily take much struggle and perseverance. Success does not have to be fast—what’s more important is that one simply does their absolute best and remains persistent.  We will keep a limited stock without the additional Hanko, specials can be made to order with approximately a 2 to 3 week delivery dependent on workload going through the shop.
