Kanban - 看板 - Dojo Name Boards

A few weeks ago I was honoured to have the privilege of training at the integrated budokan of Teikyo University in Tokyo.
I thought I would snap a few images of Japanese style kanban and compare them to the sign boards I produce here in the UK.

Teikyo University Karate Club - Kanban
To the left of the doors to the karate dojo is a small kanban, the column on the right 帝京大学 reads Tekiyo University and on the left karate club.

On the right is the larger sign which has one less kanji, university is daigaku, but here just dai is used.

Above is a set of kanban that we made for a uk club with both club and association kanji.

Nafudakake for Kimochi Ryu

Just before Christmas we completed a nafudakake, a gift for Kimochi Ryu's Instructor Ian Edward's.
The timeline was a little tight, but we got it there on time.

We complete a graphic design and send it to the client for approval prior to production.

After approval it was put into production, maple nafuda in the black kake is a striking contrast.

A3 Dan Certificate template for NAKC

Over the last few months following a number of enquiries from existing clients we started to produce both dan and kyu grade certificates.
It was something that we considered, but dismissed in the past as there are many companies out there producing certificate templates or printing certificates for clubs and associations.
We were persuaded that there was a market for clients that wanted a traditional style certificate, but did not have a current direct link to a Japanese Honbu.
The "added value" that we thought we could provide was adding the translations of students names, dates and grades as associations undertook dan gradings.
We actually produce the dan template at cost (or below) because we recognise that there is an ongoing income stream.

Over the last couple of months we have been asked by other existing clients if we could just produce a dan template where they could insert the details themselves in kana and English text.

Newton Aycliffe Karate Club asked if we could produce a certificate that they could just enter English text, they also wanted two logos converting, a custom hanko, a custom border and the 7 virtues of Bushido kanji  adding.
The template is supplied with the blue text left blank, so they can insert the details of rank, name and date.

Please take a look and drop us a mail to sotosabisu@btinternet.com with details of your project.

Nafudakake for Tividale Shotokan Karate Club

We recently produced a Nafudakake for Tividale Shotokan Karate club for their instructor Leslie Knight.
The Oak tiles were sawn and planed to size, sanded and then french polished.
Next the graphics are applied.
The frame is prepared
and then assembled
Even the back looks good :-)
We had to reproduce the logo from scratch because the one supplied was of a poor quality, it is about 99.5% perfect to the original. (but better resolution)
The completed Nafudakake.

Custom A3 Dan Certificates for Chiltern Karate Association

We recently worked closely with Chiltern Karate Association to produce a fully customised certificate.
Our client wanted a traditional style certificate, they wanted to use the same font as they use for all their Association paperwork. There was also a few changes to the honorific used on the certificate and a number of layout changes to our normal semi-custom certificate we produce.

Dan grade certificate ready for printing
Also instead of the Hanko images being printed on the certificate the template was left blank and we manufactured Hanko so they could be applied by the client after printing.

Certificate printed and Hanko added
There were many e mails back and forth with our client, we pride ourselves on being able to offer a custom service and detail is what we do best.

We produce a standard template for our customer which we hold and individual certificate pdfs are sent with registration numbers, date , grade and names translated and added to the certificate.

Please take a look and drop us a mail to sotosabisu@btinternet.com with details of your project.

Inkan for Ireland

We recently had a general enquiry from Northern Ireland and were happy to offer some advice, just as "added value".

We were a little surprised (and pleased) when our client first requested a traditional style Inkan that would typically be used by the examiner in grading books.
Followed by a fully custom stamp that is not to a traditional Japanese layout, but incorporates his name in script and translated into katakana below.

Although it takes considerably longer to produce a fully custom stamp rather than stock, we take great pride in working with our clients and try our best to produce something to their requirements.

Pictured above are the completed stamps just before shipping.
Delivery is normally 7 to 10 days from inquiry.

Custom A3 Dan grade certificates - traditional International format

After a few enquiries from clients we are excited to bring a "New" product to our portfolio of services.
A traditional International format A3 Dan grade certificate .

A3 Dan Custom Certificate
Just double click on the image to bring up in your documents viewer.

There are many companies that offer a "template" service for Associations and some that will make one-off certificates, but these are understandably quite expensive.
We have developed with the assistance of existing clients a service which we hope will appeal to traditional karate associations that do not have a Japanese Honbu dojo.

The service is two-fold:-
(1) The development of your own personal A3 dan certificate template. .
This is a bit of a "loss leader" for Soto Sabisu, but it keeps your up-front costs as low as possible.
The purple bits in the template above.
You can use use any of our six standard style formats of Wado Ryu, Shotokan, Shinto Ryu, Goju Ryu or Karate-do (at no additional cost) or choose to fully customise your style/name, logo and hanko to your association (for an additional cost).
You also choose up to two appointments for officials, their positions and names translated and appear vertically in the main text and horizontally at the base of the certificate, all included in the price.

(2) The production of Individual A3 dan grade certificates.
The Blue bits in the template above.
Including serial number, candidates name translated into katakana, grade and date in kanji.

We have kept our costs as low as possible by producing an "Electronic" Service Only.
The template is held by Soto Sabisu to ensure all future certificates follow the same layout.
Individual certificates are sent to you in a high resolution pdf file format.

All you have to do is get them printed off at your local printers.
So there is no chance of them getting lost or damaged in the post and you have incurred no postage or insurance charges.

The six current standard suites of style, kanji and hanko.
A choice of six standard set-up or make it fully custom
Following feedback from our clients we are now offering dan certificates where clubs can fill in grades, names and dates themselves.

The dan certificate explained:-
(a) Authentication Stamp - Usually only part is on the certificate and part in the associations record book. The border is not part of the pdf and part of this hanko should be off the printed area (please inform your printer). Hanko size 10 x 28mm You have a few options here:
   (i) Choose from one of our six standard style packs
(ii) Custom to your template 3 or 4 kana developed between us.

Inkan for CKA

I thought I would share with you a recent project for Chiltern Karate Association.

They wanted a 12mm inkan with the club logo and CKA in a round format and a slightly bigger square inkan with the instructors Surname. They supplied us with the full club logo to work with.

We cropped the png file and imported it into our graphics package where we converted it to a vector image and traced it.

Then we changed the colour and added the Initials CKA and the border.

We completed the Instructors Inkan and sent them a proof for approval.

Pictured above are the completed stamp just before shipping delivery is normally 7 to 10 days from enquiry.

We also translated the the association name for them and sent it to them electronically in a couple of different formats.

Club Stamp - Special Inkan

I thought I would share with you an Inkan made for a client last week.

The client wanted a black stamp to match an old one that had become worn over the years. He kindly sent us a photo of what he wanted.

The Inkan reads Anshin Ryu, we originally did the design in 13 point font and then converted it to a vector image and stretched it in the vertical plane to get a similar dimension to the original. The completed stamp is 13.3 x 5 mm.

There was a bit more graphic design involved in the stamp but it was charged out at our standard rate.

TKD Plaque

We recently made a plaque for Master Hussain, who has kindly given me permission to share the photo below.

At the time I had no idea he sat on the International Advisory Committee at the Kukkiwan - Taekwndo Headquarters in South Korea. What a great honour for Soto Sabisu.
The montage below details the graphic design process and production of the plaques.

You can choose just "Taekwondo" or "Taekwondo with the 5 Tenets"or perhaps a custom plaque to suit your individual needs. We have a few other TKD projects in the pipeline, so hopefully I can share more of our work with the TKD community soon.

The boards were made from an engineered blank which comprises of 6mm Oak bonded to a 16mm plywood, commercially produced as flooring. Typically going forward we plan to use our existing suppliers to source Oak, Maple or Beech veneers on a 18mm MDF substrate.

We will also be happy to design and quote for custom plaques in Korean.
Ideally we will require the wording in a text file (not an image) to reproduce in our graphics package.
However we are looking at partnering with a Korean translator for special projects if required.

A Hanko and Inkan

I thought I would share a Hanko and Inkan made for a client last week both were just a little bit different.

The first was a Hanko for a certificate - there were only 6 kanji - so we arrange in 3 columns in a brush style font. We then converted the font to a vector image and stretched it in the vertical plane by 50% so it would fill the square shape of the Hanko. I really like the overall appearance and something I will try in draft for clients in the future.

The second was a personal Inkan that will also be used for a certificate and was produced in reverse with the background being red and the name left blank. Again I really like the effect it produces.

There was a bit more graphic design involved in both these stamps but they were charged out at our standard rates.

Taekwondo Plaques

We are excited to be introducing a new range of plaques for Taekwondo in a hangul font.

Take a look at the montage below to see the graphic design process and production of the plaques.

You can choose just "Taekwondo" or "Taekwondo with the 5 Tenets".

TKD - 600 x 265mm

TKD & 5 Tenets - 800 x 265mm

The boards were made from an engineered blank which comprises of 6mm Oak bonded to a 16mm plywood, commercially produced as flooring. Typically going forward we plan to use our existing suppliers to source Oak, Maple or Beech veneers on a 18mm MDF substrate.

We will also be happy to design and quote for custom plaques in Korean.

Taekwondo's 5 Tenets

Courtesy (Korean - Ye Ul) - To be courteous is to show excellence of manners and social conduct and to exhibit polite behavior. Examples in Taekwon-Do might be to distinguish instructor from student, senior from junior and elder from younger, and to maintain the appropriate etiquette at all times, both within and outside the dojang (training hall 도장).

Integrity (Korean - Yom Chi) - To adhere to moral and ethical principles and to be able to define right from wrong. A Taekwon-Do instructor who misrepresents himself and his art by presenting improper techniques to his students because of a lack of knowledge, or a student who 'fixes' breaking materials before a demonstration, would show no sign of possessing integrity.

Perseverance (Korean - In Nae) - A steady persistence in a course of action, in spite of any difficulties, obstacles or discouragement. In Taekwon-Do, one must set a goal and then constantly persevere to achieve this.

Self-Control (Korean - Guk Gi) - The ability to control or restrain oneself, or one's actions or feelings. This is one of the most important of the Taekwon-Do tenents both inside and outside the dojang. A loss of self control in the dojang can prove disastrous for both student and opponent, and likewise outside the dojang during daily life.

Indomitable Spirit (Korean - Baekjul Boolgool) - An attribute shown when a courageous person and his principles are pitted against overwhelming odds. If confronted with injustice, the Taekwon-Do student will deal with the belligerent without any fear or hesitation at all, with indomitable spirit, regardless of whosoever and however many the number may be.

Eikoku Karatedo Keikokai Niju Kun

We are pleased with the finished Niju Kun for Eikoku Karatedo Keikokai.

If you are interested in comissioning a Niju Kun you can choose to go for the standard plaque or "upgrade" and add your club or association kanji and logo.

The Niju kun are the twenty guiding principles of Shotokan Karate written by Gichin Funakoshi the founder of Shotokan. The precepts are not numbered or ordered; each begins with hitotsu meaning "one" or "first" to show that each rule has the same level of importance as the others.

If  your existing logo is not a high enough resolution to use or you currently do not have one : we will provide our logo service with a 50% discount so you can include it in your plaque.

A gift headed to Hungary

We were very pleased recently to make a nafudakake for Tibor Santa Sensei who heads the FFKE in Hungary on his promotion to 5th Dan from Kevin Thurlow Sensei head of the SRKKK.
The nafudakake is made from maple nafuda (name tags) with a black kake (frame).

The Association image supplied was not a high enough resolution so was reproduced from scratch in our graphics package. The Hungarian logo was imported into the package and then traced and converted to a vector image.

Dojo Mokuroku - syllabus boards

Over the last few years we have had a few inquiries from Ju Jutsu and Aikido dojo regarding displaying dojo rules or syllabus ; for ease going forward I will use the term Mokuroku.

Up until now we have not been in a position to progress the inquiries past initial stages so we thought we would enter into a bit of research over the winter months to put us in a better position in the future.

We have come across a number of terms used, so I thought it might be an idea to explore these first.
Kyoka (curriculum board) - I believe Kyoka translates to permission or authority
Menkyo (Licence) used in the classical dan grading system
Densho - A set of Makimono (Maki)
Maki - scrolls
Mokuroku - syllabus or catalogue

We have prepared three graphics to give you an idea of  the sort of end results that could be achieved.

The scrolling image is above is our representation of Yamaoka Tesshu's Niju Kun. He was the founder of the Itto Shoden Muto Ryu which was a kenjutsu style.

The second mokuroku is our representation of just the first board of a dojo mokuroku. It includes the name of the Association and the kata name and the fourty-three moves from hitotsugachi (one-victory) through to hari (sweeping away).

The final example is again just the first board of a dojo mokuroku covering the Shoden (beginning transmission) It details Yawara (hand arts) and covers the twenty basics from katate hazushi (outside wrist grab release) to hagai shime (full-nelson escape)

Our specialty is in graphic design, layout and manufacture of your mokuroku. We do not offer a translation service as content is very detailed. You will need to supply us with an electronic copy of the contents, ideally in "Word" or similar. We can not work from Jpeg or picture images.

A guide to costings are below, international postage for very long items is very expensive so would need to be quoted on a job by job basis.
