A Dojo Nafudakake for Hakkoryu Michigan

We recently completed a nafudakake for another Hakkoryu dojo, this time in Michigan.
Every commission is custom and working with the client this piece incorporated a double width nafuda for their logo. Unfortunately they did not have a high resolution copy of the Hakkoryu mon and kanji so this was developed in our graphics package to match as closely as possible.

We have produced a short montage showing all the steps of the project from inception to completion, we hope you enjoy it.

New Style Dojo Kun plaque launched

We recently produced  a club dojo kun plaque for Haxby Shotokan Karate Club.
The Senior instructor wanted a dojo kun plague that his students could read (or be directed to) at the entrance to the dojo.
We incorporated both Romaji and English translations. The Roamji helps with students reading / learning the text and the English translation with their understanding. In this example we have used the club's / association's English translation, but we are happy to customise the English translation as required.

We also incorporated the club's logo into the design, which we had on file from a previous commission.
If you send us your logo and we will import it into our graphic design package. If the resolution is too poor, we will look at reproducing it from scratch. If we convert your "high resolution" image there is no charge for vector conversion. If we have to reproduce from scratch or design a logo for you we will discount this service by 50%.

The plaque is made from 12mm mdf with a grade "A" veneer on the face and grade "B" balancer on the reverse. This is far more stable than a solid piece of maple; which would warp and crack in a centrally heated environment at this size.
The panel was sanded down to 320 grade and a few coats of sanding sealer are added, it is then french polished before the graphics are added.

We were really pleased with the finished plaque and thought we would add it to our range. The plaque in its frame measures 475 x 315mm, you can also choose to have mirror plates added or a normal cord for picture hanging. If you would like to commission a dojo kun plaque for your dojo just drop us an E Mail to sotosabisu@btinternet.com

Something special for a rock

I had a call recently from an existing client who wanted something special to award his senior grade Sensei who had been with him for fifteen years and "been a rock."
He wanted to include a dedication to service, ideally in kanji.

We don't do translations of free text per se, but we suggested incorporating a Yojijukugo, a four character ideogram. Below is the graphic design sent to our client.

The Yojijukugo we selected was Ikki tousen which translates to having the capacity equal to one thousand warriors. Below is a photo of the finished commission, maple nafuda in a black kake. The very light coloured hardwoods are best for lighter colours, especially the orange in the school logo.

If you have a project in mind, feel free to drop us a E Mail to sotosabisu@btinternet.com

A new era for CKA

We have been producing Dan certificates for the Chiltern Karate Association for a while now, but last weekend following Dan gradings they presented successful karateka with certificates with the Imperial calendar date showing the new Reiwa era.

The Reiwa period, in Japan,is the imperial reign period that began on May 1, 2019, following the abdication of Emperor Akihito and the elevation of his son Naruhito to the Chrysanthemum Throne. The two kanji constituting the period’s reign name are rei (meaning “order” or “auspicious”) and wa (“harmony”). The official English translation of the period is “Beautiful Harmony.”

Congratulations to all recipients including Bernard and Alex above.

More than a simple thank you

I had a call a little while back from an existing client asking for ideas .....
This is quite common actually, customers know they want something special, they may have an outline of a project, but need to explore what is possible.
The majority of everything we do is custom, specialising in one-offs or small production runs so before long a concept can be developed.

We developed the graphic around one of our standard plaque sizes 350 x 220mm. The design used the clients logo which we had developed in a previous commission. From the basic design above we went on to personalise each plaque with the recipients name.

The maple boards were wrapped in oak frames, sealed and a wax applied.

Minakami kindly shared some photos with us and gave us permission to post.

The cost of our standard plaque, using a standard graphic is £89.
We did have some existing Minakami design on file so were happy to develop the graphics and undertake all the translation at nil cost and still apply a discount for a multiple sale.
Hopefully this helps in building long term relationships with clients.

If you have a project in mind, feel free to drop us a E Mail to sotosabisu@btinternet.com

New A4 Kyu grade certificate template added to our range

We have just added "Template B" to our range of A4 Kyu grade templates. It offers a portrait format with a classical Phoenix border.

A4 kyu Custom Certificate - Template B
The certificate was for an existing client, we already had his logo and kanji translation on file.
So although he selected to customise the certificate with the association's name, logo and hanko the additional work did not incur a charge.

A high resolution pdf was sent to the client. They selected a format without printers crop marks so they could self print on demand. We can also send the files with crop marks so clients can elect to have certificates commercial printed on oversize paper or card and "cropped" to size. This ensures that all prints are central to paper and usually obtains a higher resolution finish.

Current costings can be found in the relevant shop page please click on the button below to view.

Custom A4 Kyu Certificate for Brazil

We were recently asked to produce a custom A4 Kyu Certificate for a Shotokan Club based in Brazil.

The Club provided the Portuguese translation in a "word" format so we could import it into our graphics package.

This was a fully custom certificate which involved quite a few E Mails back and forth. We pride ourselves on going that extra mile to ensure the client ends up with want they want, even if it is outside our normal range.

Current costings can be found in the relevant shop page please click on the button below to view.

Custom Participation Certificates for Brazil

We were recently commissioned by the "Instituto Hitsuji Karate-do Shotokan" from Brazil to create a kata / bunkai certificate for a series of courses they had planned.

We developed a certificate template that has now been added to our range of certificates and then worked with the client to adapt it to their specific requirements.

We provided the client with the English text, which they translated into Portuguese and returned so we could add it to the certificate.

If you have a project in mind and want to include a International language text other than English we ask that the client provides the text in a "word" format for insertion.

Above is a photo of the seminar participants with their certificates.

To find out more about these certificates and our range, click on the links in the sidebar, please take a look and drop us a mail to sotosabisu@btinternet.com with details of your project.

A3 Senior Dan Certificate

We are excited to bring a "New" product to our portfolio of services.
A traditional International format A3 Senior Dan grade certificate, these are typically used for 6th dan and above and usually are produced in kana only with no international text.
We have produced a template that has kana in prominence, but also  provides all the information in English without taking away from the traditional Japanese roots.

Just double click on the image to bring up in your documents viewer.

There are many companies that offer a "template" service for Associations and some that will make one-off certificates, but these are understandably quite expensive.
We have developed with the assistance of existing clients a service which we hope will appeal to traditional karate associations that do not have a Japanese Honbu dojo.

The service is two-fold:-
(1) The development of your own personal A3 senior dan certificate template.
The purple bits in the template above.
You can use use any of our six standard style formats of Wado Ryu, Shotokan, Shinto Ryu, Goju Ryu or Karate-do (at no additional cost) or choose to fully customise your style/name, logo and hanko to your association (for an additional cost).
You also choose up to two appointments for officials, their positions and names translated and appear vertically in the main text and horizontally at the base of the certificate, all included in the price.

(2) The production of Individual A3 senior dan grade certificates.
The Blue bits in the template above.
Including serial number, candidates name translated into katakana, grade and date in kanji.

We have kept our costs as low as possible by producing an "Electronic" Service Only.
The template is held by Soto Sabisu to ensure all future certificates follow the same layout.
Individual certificates are sent to you in a high resolution pdf file format.

All you have to do is get them printed off at your local printers.
So there is no chance of them getting lost or damaged in the post and you have incurred no postage or insurance charges.

The Senior dan certificate explained:-
(a) Authentication Stamp - Usually only part is on the certificate and part in the associations record book. The border is not part of the pdf and part of this hanko should be off the printed area (please inform your printer). Hanko size 10 x 28mm You have a few options here:
   (i) Choose from one of our six standard style packs - free
(ii) Custom to your template 3 or 4 kana developed between us.

(b) Ordinal number prefix - dai

(h) Style / Association name in English.

There is no e-commerce shop for a good reason, most of what we do are one-off commissions.
We are likely to exchange quite a few E Mails while we develop your project together.
Soto Sabisu will produce a draft and once approved by you, we will send you a Pro-forma Invoice.

To keep our costs as low as possible our preferred payment method is by BACS, however we will accept credit card payments via Pay Pal subject to a transaction premium of 5%.
